Reflect on Challenges

Michael Jordan encountered setbacks that fueled his determination. Being cut from his high school team and early playoff exits pushed him to prove himself. Challenges against the Pistons helped him improve. Setbacks shaped his determination and teach us to reflect on our own challenges and plan for the future.

Activity Introduction

Watch this video for 4minutes and 45 seconds. Throughout his career, Michael Jordan faced setbacks that fueled his determination to succeed. He was initially cut from his high school basketball team, but this setback motivated him to prove himself. In the NBA, the Chicago Bulls experienced early playoff exits, but Jordan's resilience and hard work propelled them to success. He also faced challenges against the Detroit Pistons, leading him to improve his skills and develop new strategies. These setbacks ultimately played a crucial role in shaping Jordan's determination and drive for excellence. Reflect on how you have overcome challenges and how reflecting helps you plan for the future in every area of your life, friendships, relationships, and pathways that you choose to take.

  • What do you admire most about Michael Jordan's career and the success he achieved? How do you think his determination and work ethic contributed to his accomplishments?

  • Reflect on some of the challenges and setbacks that Michael Jordan faced throughout his career. How do you think he used these experiences as motivation to improve and achieve even greater success?

  • Michael Jordan is often considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time. What lessons can we learn from his journey, both in terms of his successes and the challenges he overcame? How can we apply those lessons in our own lives, whether it's in sports or other areas of interest?

Activity Tips

  1. Remind the students to write down words they don’t understand or questions that immediately come to mind about the topic they’re watching.

  2. Tell them to be ready to share with their group.



Step 2:
Group Session

After the video, divide students into groups of 3 or 4 and let the students begin their discussions while you circulate; it’s all about what THEY think and feel. Ask them to listen carefully to their friends as they might have different opinions to them.

Step 3:
Assessment

Ask the students:

  • Ask the students who they believe the best listeners and best team players are from this activity. 

  • Ask them to justify their answers in a simple sentence. 

  • Explain to them that the idea is everyone improves both their listening and teamwork skills over time.

  • Ask the students to summarize the video in 6-8 words only.
